Ao Leuk Beach & Bay In Koh Tao, Thailand

by David & Intan

The Aow Leuk Beach is one of the nicest white sand beaches on Koh Tao island, and itโ€™s hidden in the easy to reach Ao Leuk Bay.

The color of the water here is a unique shade of light blue, and itโ€™s so bright it almost looks like Listerine or something.

This travel guide will explain how to get to Ao Leuk Koh Tao, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Ao Leuk Koh Tao: What To Expect

Aow Leuk Beach is a great beach for soaking up sun, snorkeling, and kayaking.

Itโ€™s not the biggest beach on Koh Tao, but in my opinion it may be the nicest. It has perfect sand and turquoise water, but itโ€™s not too remote or crowded.

There is a restaurant and a resort at the beach too if you want to stick around longer. Sadly Iโ€™ve heard some recent reports about rubbish at the beach, so please try to keep it clean if you visit.

Snorkeling is decent around the boulders on either side of the bay, and gives you a chance to see some nice, colorful reef fish and baby sharks.

Kayaking To Shark Island

When youโ€™re visiting Ao Leuk Beach, you might notice the rocky island sitting off in the distance. Thatโ€™s Shark Island, and you can take a kayak out there for a closer look!

From the surface, this island looks like itโ€™s just a big clump of rocks, but you can do snorkeling or diving here, and itโ€™s also a great spot to get some drone shots.

The distance to the island is only about 1.3 kilometers (less than a mile) if you start from Aow Leuk Beach.

How To Get To Ao Leuk Koh Tao

Aow Leuk Beach is located on the south east side of Koh Tao island.

The road to the beach is steep and rough at times, so you may want to park up the hill. Beach access is through the Aow Leuk Resort.

Look for the sign by the road that says Free Entrance To The Beach. Aow Leuk Grand Hill Resort (pic above). Take a left turn at the sign.

Ao Leuk is just a 10 minute drive from the main pier and tourist areas at Sairee Beach, and many places will rent you a scooter for 150 Baht ($5 USD) to explore the island all day.

Even better, our hotel in south Koh Tao was close enough to drive there in just 5 minutes!

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a hotel called Aukotan Place in south Koh Tao. The price was $25 USD for a big double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This hotel includes free buffet breakfast even though itโ€™s not mentioned on Booking.com. They also give a free daily transfer to and from the pier, and Sairee Beach, which was super handy, and they have scooter rentals for a good price.

The location of the hotel was perfect. Itโ€™s a 15 minute walk from Freedom Beach, Shark Bay, and John Suwan Viewpoint.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
