Lengkuas Island & Lighthouse In Belitung, Indonesia

by David & Intan

Pulau Lengkuas is a small island with a colonial lighthouse off the coast of Belitung, Indonesia.

The combination of perfect white sand and palm trees, giant granite boulders, and calm blue water makes Lengkuas island one of the best things to see on a Belitung island hopping tour.

We loved this place and didnโ€™t want to leave. The island and lighthouse both feel like something right out of Myst or Robinson Crusoe.

This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

Island Hopping Belitung Tour

First of all, if youโ€™re looking for a vetted tour guide for exploring the islands, Street Taxi Belitung has a private Island Hopping Belitung Tour starting at 590k IDR ($40 USD) per person.

This tour visits the top sights like Lengkuas Island, Batu Berlayar, and more, and it includes free lunch, entrance tickets, snorkeling gear, life jackets, and hotel pickup/dropoff.

Alternatively, if you just show up at the main harbor in Tanjung Kelayang, then you may be able to find a boat driver with an even better price by haggling. Thatโ€™s what we did on one of our trips and everything went smoothly, although the boat drivers have limited English.

Pulau Lengkuas Island

Pulau Lengkuas is a small 2 acre island with white sand beaches and granite boulders.

Itโ€™s a paradise landscape, and we were feeling jealous of the local family that stays and lives here 24/7 to manage the lighthouse.

Before you go up the lighthouse, take a minute to walk around and explore the island. Thereโ€™s another beach behind the houses, and a sea of palms thatโ€™s great for photos.

We saw some great sea shells, and even a few big monitor lizards walking around by the beach!

Lengkuas Lighthouse

The main attraction of Pulau Lengkuas is the colonial lighthouse. This was built by the Dutch in 1882, and itโ€™s still functioning today.

The lighthouse is 18 stories tall, and if youโ€™re lucky you can climb to the very top! Iโ€™ve seen some reviews saying itโ€™s closed to the public, but when we went in 2020 it was no problem.

A few stairs were rusted out and missing, but for the most part everything was in surprisingly good shape. Iโ€™m sure thereโ€™s been some upkeep over the centuries.

Itโ€™s not a particularly hard climb. Each floor has windows and an opportunity to rest and catch your breath.

From the top of the lighthouse, you can see the lamp and then walk out onto the balcony, where youโ€™ll have a 360 degree view of the island and rocks below.

Itโ€™s an outstanding experience!

Lengkuas Snorkeling

The water is pretty calm at Lengkuas island and there are some great snorkeling opportunities.

The best spot we found for this was near the small island in front of Lengkuas (itโ€™s a separate island, but very tiny). Thereโ€™s also a spot in the reefs on the backside of the island. Your boat driver can take you there, because itโ€™s hard to reach either spot on your own.

Youโ€™ll see lots of friendly fish and good coral, and the depth is perfect for snorkeling.

Entrance Fees

Lengkuas island is free to visit.

If you go up to the top of the lighthouse, thereโ€™s a 10k Rupiah fee (less than one US Dollar).

How To Get There

Lengkuas island is a 30 minute boat ride starting from the dock at Tanjung Kelayang in Belitung.

The best way to get there is to take an island hopping boat tour from Belitung. Along the way, youโ€™ll get to see other scenic islands like Batu Berlayar, Kepayang Island, and Sand Island.

You can book this tour with Street Taxi Belitung starting at 590k IDR ($40 USD) per person.
